Orlando, FL

Yes, there's a city beyond the theme parks. A good one.

Skip the $150 park tickets for a day. Orlando has natural springs where manatees swim (Blue Spring, 30 min north), bioluminescent kayaking, free outdoor concerts at Lake Eola, and a legit food and comedy scene that has nothing to do with Disney. The real Orlando is cheaper, weirder, and more interesting than the tourist version.

Local tip

Blue Spring State Park, 30 minutes north: $6 per car, and from November to March you'll see dozens of wild manatees in crystal-clear water. No aquarium. Just actual manatees. Go on a weekday.
