Boston, MA
Small city, enormous history, surprisingly good time.
Boston is walkable in a way most American cities aren't. The Freedom Trail is free, the harbor is free, the Common is free, and half the museums have free nights. It's a college town with world-class institutions — the energy changes completely between September and June.
Local tip
The USS Constitution Museum is free (suggested donation). It's a real warship from 1797 that you walk around on. Most tourists skip it for the Freedom Trail — their loss.
