Houston, TX

NASA, the Menil, and the best food city nobody talks about.

Houston's museum district has 19 museums, and the best one — the Menil Collection — is always free. Space Center Houston is the real deal (actual mission control, actual moon rocks), and the food scene is the most diverse in America. More than 70 languages spoken here, and you can taste every one of them.

Local tip

Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park has free performances — symphony, ballet, Shakespeare, concerts — almost every night in season. Covered seating is ticketed but the hill is always free. Bring a blanket.
