Phoenix, AZ
Desert heat, mountain hikes, and sunsets that don't quit.
Phoenix has 300+ days of sunshine, world-class desert hiking, and a cost of living that makes coastal cities look absurd. Camelback Mountain and Papago Park are free, the Desert Botanical Garden is stunning, and First Fridays on Roosevelt Row turn downtown into a free outdoor art festival. Just don't hike in July — the heat is real. Hike Camelback or Piestewa Peak before 7am October through April. After May, stick to flat trails or you'll melt. Locals carry twice the water tourists think they need.
