Philadelphia, PA

The Rocky steps are free. The art inside is the real knockout.

Philly is criminally underrated. The Philadelphia Museum of Art (yes, the Rocky steps) is world-class, Reading Terminal Market is the best indoor market in America, and the entire historic district — Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House — is walkable in an afternoon. Also: the Mutter Museum has a wall of skulls and Einstein's brain. For $20.

Local tip

Rodin Museum is pay-what-you-wish. It has the largest Rodin collection outside of Paris. Most people walk past it on the way to the Art Museum. Don't.
