Salt Lake City, UT

Mountains in every direction. Skiing 35 minutes away.

Salt Lake City is the best outdoor-access city in America. Six world-class ski resorts within 45 minutes, hiking trails that start at the edge of the city, and the Great Salt Lake is unlike anything else in the country. The downtown is walkable, the craft beer scene exists (despite what you've heard), and the cost of living is still reasonable compared to Denver or Portland. Drive up Emigration Canyon for a free sunset hike at Ensign Peak — 20 minutes round trip, full valley panorama. Locals do it after work. It's the best quick view in any mountain city.
