Burlington, VT
Lake Champlain, Church Street, and a town that punches absurdly above its weight.
Burlington is tiny but dense with good things. Church Street is a four-block pedestrian mall with local shops and restaurants. Lake Champlain has beaches and a free waterfront park. The food scene — farm-to-table before it was a phrase — is excellent for a city this size. It also happens to be where Ben & Jerry's started. Sunset on the Burlington waterfront is free and faces west over Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks behind it. Bring takeout from Church Street.
