Des Moines has the Pappajohn Sculpture Park (free, 30+ major works in 4 acres), a surprisingly great food scene downtown, and the Iowa State Fair which is genuinely one of the best events in America. The East Village neighborhood has more going on than you'd expect, and everything is affordable. Des Moines Art Center is free — designed by three different world-famous architects (Saarinen, Pei, Meier). The building itself is the exhibit.
