Lexington, KY
Horse farms, bourbon, and a downtown that keeps surprising people.
Lexington is the Horse Capital of the World, surrounded by bluegrass horse farms with white fences that look exactly like the postcards. The Bourbon Trail starts here (or ends here, depending on your strategy), Keeneland is one of the most beautiful racetracks in America, and the downtown dining scene on Limestone and Short has gotten legitimately good. Keeneland has free morning workouts — show up at dawn, watch thoroughbreds train, eat a $3 breakfast at the track kitchen. One of the best free mornings in Kentucky.
