RISD, Federal Hill, and a river they literally set on fire for fun.

Providence has RISD (one of the best art schools in the world), which means the art scene punches way above its size. Federal Hill is one of the best Italian-American food neighborhoods in the country, WaterFire is a free art installation where they light the river on fire, and the whole city is walkable. WaterFire events are free — dozens of bonfires floating on the river, music, food vendors, thousands of people walking the banks. Check the schedule; it's not every night.
