The default slice. No argument, no gimmick, no line that isn't worth it.
Open since 1975. A regular slice is around $3.50 and it's the benchmark every other slice in the city is measured against. Thin, foldable, a little greasy -- correct. The Carmine Street original is the one you want. Multiple locations now but this is the one. Open until 4am on weekends, which makes it a late-night essential.

mamouns.comThe best coffee shop for actually getting work done. WiFi, outlets, tables, and they don't glare at your laptop.
Multiple locations but the Mercer Street one near NYU is the flagship. Fair-trade, organic beans. Coffee $3-6, pastries and light food available. The real draw: big tables, reliable WiFi, plenty of outlets, and a culture that doesn't passive-aggressively discourage working. One of the few Manhattan coffee shops where you can sit for 3 hours without guilt.
